Banish All Their Fears - Alternate Neerwinden Scenario - 1704 Battle of the Schellenberg

NOTE: reverse the compass on the map, south becomes north, west becomes east, etc.

Battle of Schellenberg

July 2nd, 1704, Start time: 6:00pm

Modified Scenario for "Banish All Their Fears," Bayonet and Musket vol. 1

Setting:

The Duke of Marlborough has marched an Allied corps from the Rhine to the Danube River, and linked up with the army of the Margrave of Baden. Together they hope to crush the Franco-Bavarian forces that are threatening Vienna. Their first target is the city of Donauworth on the Danube River. But a Franco-Bavarian corps under the Comte d'Arco has occupied the Schellenberg, a hill to the east whose height commands the town, and are busy fortifying their position. Marlborough, alternating command of the Allied army with Baden, force marches his men the whole of July 2nd in order to be in a position to assault the Schellenberg. By the time his men are ready to assault at 6pm, the day is well spent. Baden's men are still forming up. The Allied army will be attacking breastworks up-hill, and the cost will be high, but if Marlborough is forced to delay his assault for another day, they may not be able to achieve victory at any cost. The entire campaign rests on the success of this battle.

Victory Conditions:

The Allies must have three brigades over the breastworks by nightfall at 9:00pm. Otherwise, it is considered a Franco-Bavarian victory.

Note on Forces:

This scenario uses counters from the Blenheim Scenario of Banish All Their Fears, with a few from the Neerwinden scenario. The names of regiments and brigades are not entirely accurate, but they approximate the forces present at the battle. (Note: exclude all battalion guns for both sides)

Note on Map:

Use the Neerwinden map. Ensure that the brigades are in compliance with the wing boundaries, unless otherwise noted on the above map.

Note on Terrain:

With Marlborough's men attacking uphill, add 1 Movement Point when moving South in his deployment zone. Donauworth and Danube River are inaccessible.

Note on Command Display:

Marlborough's wing has a capacity of 5 brigades, Baden's wing has a capacity of 3 brigades.

Forces:

Arco and Maffei are defending the Schellenberg with 14,000 men.

Marlborough and Baden are attacking with more than 50,000 men in total. (Note: only about 20,000 were engaged historically)
