The Glorious Revolution - James II's Army at Salisbury - Part 2: Foot

Grand Review on Hounslow Heath, 1687

Following up on my last post about the Horse of James II's army, I here post all the information I have gathered about the Foot, again drawn from Stephen Ede-Borrett's book, cited below. Excluding the newly-raised regiments, it seems that King James had 20,920 infantry, and adding 6,200 cavalry to that, we have the 27,000 men gathered at Salisbury mentioned by John Ellis in a letter on November 24th. To this might have been added as many as 7,000 more of newly-raised regiments. This would have nearly doubled William of Orange's 14,000 troops. However, with the defection of his most able officers, King James lost heart, and soon lost his crown.
